- A cooperative effort to encourage high school students to enter health careers on every vocational level--therapeutic, diagnostic, healthcare information systems and support services. The Pitt County Medical Society assists with resource personnel and mentors for the project.

PROJECT HEART BEAT
www.projectheartbeat.org

- An AED --automated external defibrillator-is a simple device that restores a person's heartbeat to a normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. Project HeartBeat is a community effort to facilitate the placement of AED's and save lives in our community. The Pitt County Medical Society has been instrumental in this effort and recently over 40 defibrillators have been placed in Pitt County municipalities, businesses, churches and public places.
In the case of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), for every minute lost without defibrillation, the chance of a victim's survival is diminished by 10%. The Pitt County Medical Society recognizes the need to address this important problem by serving as the community resource organization for those wanting to establish an AED program.

PITT PARTNERS FOR HEALTH

- A consortium of healthcare professionals that address a continuum of healthcare issues - access to care, diabetes, asthma, cardio-vascular disease, youth risk behaviors, older adults, and mental health. PCMS is committed to working for a healthier community.

HEALTH ASSIST

- The Pitt County Medical Society helped to establish 4 community/health resource centers designed to address the health needs of the uninsured population in Pitt County. Area physicians donate their services to this cause so qualified individuals without health insurance can be seen for medical problems.

END OF LIFE COALITION

- A task force of healthcare professionals whose mission is "to provide education and support to help area residents have conversations and make decisions that lead to compassion and comfortable end of life care." The Pitt County Medical Society participates in this important organization by offering resources, sample documents and seminars to the public.

HISTORY PROJECT

- The Pitt County Medical Society has assisted in acquiring the Country Doctor Museum in Bailey, NC for the Laupus Health Sciences Library at the Brody School of Medicine. PCMS has also assisted in the expansion of the "History of Medicine in Eastern N. C. Exhibit" with medical artifacts and books as well as taped interviews with physicians who have seen the growth and development of medicine in our area. Contact PCMS if you are interested in donating books, medical artifacts or volunteering to help with the recording of the history of medicine in eastern Carolina.
